Southern Kitchen Helpful Hints

Before I get to the helpful hints I would like to give you an update on my life.  Do you remember this picture that I posted awhile back?  I told you that I have never looked like this, do not look like this and will never look like this but I wanted this to be your mental picture of me.  Do you remember now?

This is all going to change because today I bought a bread machine at a thrift shop for $4.  This is going to be the end of me because to me there is nothing better than hot bread with butter!!!!  I have resisted getting one for all these years but today I could no longer resist.  I went for it with the rationalization that I will be making multigrain bread.  Right!!

On to the helpful hints.  Although I have been living in Florida for almost 12 years I do not consider myself even close to being a Southerner.  However, 12 years of living here as given me great admiration for southern kitchens and cooking.  The hints I am presenting today have been taken from generations of southern cooks and are not only authentic but also filled with good stuff.

Here goes:

  • Add flavor to tea by dissolving old-fashioned lemon drops or hard mint candies in it.  They melt quickly and keep the tea brisk.
  • Calorie-free club soda adds sparkle to iced fruit juices and reduced calories per portion.
  • Place fresh or dried mint in the bottom of a cup of hot chocolate for a cool and refreshing taste.
  • Never boil coffee; it brings out acids and causes a bitter taste.
  • When making fresh lemonade or orange juice remember that one lemon yields about 1/4 cup juice, while one orange yields about 1/3 cup juice.
  •
Hope these are good for you.

Meanwhile .... keep it simple and make it real.

  1. Giggle ... I will always visualize you as the hot one in the black bikini (nice tan too!) ... my bread machine is packed and ready to go to Goodwill IF the Boy doesn't want it ... I've given up grains (for the most part) and well, it just takes up too much valuable space :-)

    1. Thank you keeping that mental picture - it makes me feel better. I don't blame you for packing it up and I will be doing that someday when my enthusiasm dwindles.
